Sexual violence is a global concern affecting one in three women worldwide. In Uganda physical or sexual violence is predominant in the form of Gender Based Violence(GBV), with early child marriage and female genital mutilation also prevalent. In Mayuge District 26% of women experience sexual violence by partner compared to 9.2% of men. This project aimed to enhance the knowledge of stakeholders who would then disseminate GBV sensitization across communities reducing GBV occurrence and improving response.
Participants were chosen based on their roles in identifying GBV cases, providing services, addressing GBV related issues in their communities. The training approach employed various methods including experience sharing, brainstorming and powerpoint presentations. Thematic areas covered included witnessing victimhood, whistleblowing and service provision.

Agreed actions included increasing the workforce for GBV, mapping GBV hotspots and vulnerable families, integrating GBV messages in daily community meetings, identifying and referring GBV cases actively, creating functional referral systems and establishing feedback loops to ensure cases are followed up and documented.
Participants appreciated the training which enhanced their knowledge on GBV forms, effects, management and service points. They recommended more frequent training and pledged to become change agents in their communities, raising awareness on GBV locally and beyond. Together they can make a difference and eliminate GBV from society.
